It’s actually a pretty solid metaphor for life, if you ask me. Some days you’ve got it all together; other days, everything’s unraveling faster than a cheap roll of paper towel.My mother made cabbage rolls when I was a kid, but only for special occasions. I remember it being a full-day production — an Olympic-level commitment to comfort food. She’d freeze a massive head of cabbage, thaw it, and peel off the leaves one by one until she had a perfect stack. Because if you do — with dinner, or with life — you might just find it turns out even better than you imagined. Just like this recipe — a little messy but still a lot delicious. Deconstructed Cabbage RollsWhat Goes In It1-2 tbsp olive oil 1 lb extra-lean ground beef1 yellow onion, diced3 cloves garlic, minced½ head of green cabbage (3-4 cups), chopped into bite-sized pieces1 398ml can tomato sauce3/4 cup uncooked rice ( white, brown, basmati)2 1/2 cups beef broth1 tsp dried thyme1 tsp paprika1 tsp oregano1 tbsp saltSalt and pepper to tasteHow You Make ItHeat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add your ground beef and onion. Sauté until the beef is browned and the onion is soft and starting to smell like you know what you’re doing. Add garlic and cook for another minute.Toss in the chopped cabbage sprinkle the salt over top to release some of the moisture. Cook the cabbage for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly until it softens.Add tomato sauce, rice, broth, and all your herbs and spices. Give it a stir. It’s going to look like way too much cabbage, but relax —it will shrink down as it cooks. Once you’ve stirred everything together, reduce to low, cover, and simmer for about 25–30 minutes or until your rice is soft. Stir occasionally so the rice doesn’t glue itself to the bottom of the pot. If it starts to look too thick, add a bit more broth or water.Check that the rice and cabbage are tender. Add more salt and pepper if needed.Spoon into bowls and enjoy.

One of her favourite things to do was to make enough food for leftovers. I’m talking copious amounts of food that there was no way were going to be able to finish in one sitting. Now, ten-year-old Stacey thought leftovers were a crime against humanity. The gall. The audacity! Eating the same thing twice in a row? Unthinkable! Of course, tiny Stacey was a bit of a spoiled dum-dum, because as it turns out, leftovers are not only delicious, they’re an absolute life hack. They are the thing that gets me through week after week of “what’s for dinner?” That’s my least favourite question. You and I both know that life is busy—practices, rehearsals, appointments, and endless to-dos. These days, I live by the “cook once, eat twice” philosophy. My mom understood the power of this philosophy back then and thankfully, now that my frontal lobe has finished developing, I now understand it too.I knew two things for sure growing up: 1) if my mom was cooking, there would be enough food to feed an army, and 2) even if she wasn’t physically there, the food was proof she was still taking care of me.Now I do the same for my own kids, hoping they’ll grow up feeling that same love and security. Even if I’m not around, they know they can open the fridge or freezer, find something delicious I’ve made, and count on it—and on me. It may seem like a small thing but I find that all those small gestures add up to one big legacy of love. And now I’m sharing one of my mom’s signature recipes with all of you. It freezes beautifully making it perfect for leftovers, and maybe, just maybe, it’ll become one of your family favorites too—her legacy finding its way into your kitchen, one bite at a time.Hamburger SoupPrep time: 15 mins Cook time: 2 hours or longer Serving size: 8What Goes In It 1 lb of lean ground beef 1 medium yellow onion, chopped (about 2 cups) 1 796 ml can of diced tomatoes 3 284 ml tins of beef consommé 6 cups of beef stock1 284 ml can of tomato soup 2 cups of water 4 medium carrots, peeled and chopped (about 2 cups) 3 celery stalks, chopped (about 1 cup) 1 dried bay leaf8 tbsp pearl barley How You Make It In a large pot, fry the ground beef and onion on medium-high heat until the meat has browned and the onion is soft. Drain off fat and return meat to the pot. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for 2 hours or longer to really get those flavours popping. Literally, that’s all you do. I mean, give it a stir every once in a while because the barley tends to stick to the bottom if you don’t, and of course tell your family that you worked very, very hard to prepare this delicious meal for them, but there really isn’t anything else to do. Don’t worry, though, your secret is safe with me. We’re in this together, after all. Don't forget to remove the bay leaf before serving. No one wants to eat the bay leaf.

"I'm a dog mom," she says, and goes back to mincing. Her fingers work methodically, tearing dog food into smaller and smaller pieces. The woman who once spit on audiences from punk stages now performs this daily ritual of care with the focus of a surgeon.This is going to be that kind of conversation—where every expectation gets shredded like dog food.The Operating Table High"So I was wide awake," Bif says, settling into her Toronto condo couch, miniskirt riding up as she crosses her legs. She's talking about her heart surgery like most people describe a spa day. "They thread a little camera through your leg all the way to your heart, and they can see what they're doing on the screen."She leans forward, eyes bright with the memory. "The surgeon is wearing a pineapple hat—like, the surgical hat had cartoon pineapples on it. And they're listening to William Shatner singing. Have you ever heard him sing? Who knew this album existed?"This is a woman describing having a hole in her heart closed with what she calls "a little umbrella device," conscious the entire time, finding it all hilarious and profound in equal measure. They need to inject Novocaine into her leg to make the incision. You know that heavy, aching feeling from the dentist?"I said, 'Oh! It feels like the dentist is between my legs.'"She covers her face, laughing and mortified simultaneously. "The nurses started howling. This patient is on the table, making what they think is dirty talk. But I just meant—" she gestures helplessly "—the Novocaine!"Her whole body shakes with laughter now. "Of course that's what I said. How fucking funny is that?"God's Rejection and Other Love Stories"God is not going to choose me for whatever reason," she says, the laughter suddenly gone. "I'm going to stay here on earth and have to deal with it. Because I'm not learning my lessons yet."The shift in energy is palpable. She's talking about her pattern now—the violent men, the criminal boyfriends, the marriages to liars. "If there's a wrong guy, send him my way. If he is a criminal, if he's a violent felon, send him my way. I'm going to fall in love with that idiot every time."She delivers this like a weather report, no self-pity, just fact. When I ask why she got divorced, she doesn't hesitate: "Because I married liars." She demonstrates a position, her leg extending with muscle memory from decades ago. "I wanted to be an actress and a ballet star."Then a drummer named Brett needed a singer. Suddenly she had a vehicle for all her poetry, all her rage about El Salvador and Indigenous treatment and misogyny. Whether it was ballet slippers or combat boots, she was always searching for a stage—just took her a while to find the right one."I got to stand up there. I got to spit on the audience. I got to say, fuck you, you can't objectify me." Her voice rises with the memory, that old fire flickering. "I didn't even have to sing very well. And believe me, I could not. "They're a not-for-profit, we're a for-profit business, so we get them to do all of our scholarship fund work."The partnership makes perfect sense: Harper brings platform and profits, while Indspire brings three decades of experience.
